The eerie imagery of Junji Ito, master of horror manga, has always stuck in my mind. When I first read Uzumaki, the story was so clear and visceral that for days afterward, it was like the panels were inked on the back of my eyelids.
In the book, spirals appear everywhere. The air, the water, smoke from chimneys, patterns in trees, all are tainted by the mysterious shape. I wanted to have some stylized FX work in my reel, so I seized on the opportunity to harness the uncanny valley and watch the smoke curl off the page.
